It was at this time that she assumed her pen name, which is an homage to her maternal great-grandmother, Bell Blair Hooks. hooks began her first book, Ain’t I a Woman: Black Women and Feminism, as an undergraduate, which was published during her PhD in 1981. She earned her undergraduate degree from Stanford University in 1973 and her master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1976, followed by a PhD from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1983, all in English literature. Bell hooks (née Gloria Jean Watkins) was born on Septemin rural Hopkinsville, KY as one of seven children. ![]()
